Reminders

Dear Parents and Guardians,

No school for all students tomorrow,  Friday Nov. 1st!

Student work was sent home for most of the students who attended this week.  Students who didn't take home their work today will do it on Monday.

The letter next week is b.

Constable Tony visited the PM class and did a presentation yesterday.  Ask your student what was surprising, what they liked about it, and what they learned and wonder about.

Safety First!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the weather gets colder and icier there are some concerns about the safety of the TLC Kindergarten students being dropped off and picked up.  Parents need to walk their child/children in their care to the Kindergarten doors. Coming to the doors and making contact with the teacher is an important safety routine. Students are instructed not to cross the street or step off the sidewalk in front of traffic and the busses.

Please respect our loading zones and do not stop to pick up your child in those zones.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe.

More Information About October 31st.

FYI

Spirit Day - October 31, 2019 – wear your Halloween costume to school. Reminders about safety (masks impede vision so please don’t wear masks) and appropriateness of your costume (not too scary, no weapons with your costume). Students can wear their costume all day if they choose.
Student Voice representatives choose a spirit day each month.  These days are always optional.  Students can choose to participate or choose not to participate.

Students not wearing costumes can wear casual clothes and not wear their uniform on Spirit Days during our year.

A Short Week

No students attend school this Friday, November 1st.  It's a school wide PD day.

Dressing Up On Thursday

Students can dress for Halloween on Thursday if they choose to.  We ask that students don't bring props such as swords, wear masks that can be a hazard or bring any edibles to school to share.

The letters this week are qu.  Students will be generating words that begin with the letters qu.

AM students are attending the Grade 5/6 assembly tomorrow morning.  PM students will attend the next assembly to celebrate student learning.

Ask your student about the math and science we're doing with our three, small, medium and large pumpkins.  Students are estimating, counting, measuring, drawing and writing numbers using each of the pumpkins.  We will be doing an experiment on whether the pumpkins sink or flat and students have made predictions for each size of pumpkin.

When you're in the school check out the student art titled About Me outside the classrooms and in the main hall near the office.

Photo Information

Hi Parents,

Some students have been asking about photo packages. Usually photo proofs and order forms are prepared with a few weeks and will be sent home with your son or daughter. You will have the option of ordering a photo package at that time. Photo retake day is Thursday November 7th for students who missed picture day or wish to have retakes. Class photos will be taken later in the school year.

A reminder that tomorrow (Friday October 25th) is PM Kindergarten.

This week we read the story "Waiting for Winter" by Sebastian Meschenmoser. It is a story about a squirrel, a hedgehog, and a bear waiting for winter. Ask your son or daughter what things they mistake for snowflakes!

Friday Updates

Dear Parents and Guardians,

There is no school for all students this coming Monday, October 21st.

With the unpredictable weather and colder days please make sure that your student (s) are dressed for the weather!  We're continuing our learning on the land and going out for gym classes so all students need to be wearing a jacket.

The colorful road art at the bus zone drop off spot was a parent council initiative.  It is not a crosswalk and therefore cars are not legally required to stop when parents and students are crossing.
Please use caution when crossing or driving as the amount of traffic both cars and foot traffic makes this area one that requires your full attention.

Students did sorting for math this past week and engaged in math learning during centers.  They sorted using color, shape and size as the sorting rules.  We're continuing our math lessons outside and students are matching numbers with quantities using natural, found materials such as leaves, rocks, sticks etc.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is individual photo day.  If possible students should wear their Monday, or formal uniform for their photos.

AM students experienced their first fire drill this morning.  They did a great job!

Kindergarten News and Updates

Hello Parents and Guardians!

AM students only attend school this Friday.  Thank you for remembering to pack a double snack or a lunch for Fridays!

The next weeks are short but busy times for Kindergarten.  We are continuing our teaching and assessing for the EYE (Early Years Evaluation) with students participating in tasks and activities that support their learning across all areas of the assessment.  The assessments will wrap up at the end of this month.

We'll be taking advantage of this great fall weather and we'll be heading out to do our math learning on the land.  Students will use natural materials to match numbers with quantities to 10.  We're looking forward to sharing this with you in the days to come.

Some gym classes are being held outside while the weather permits. Please have your children dress for the weather.

The letter this week is o.  We're reading books and watching videos to practice letter recognition and the o graphemes.  Reading books at home and having your child identify the letter o in the initial and middle of words is helpful practice.

A reminder to please not drop off or park in the bussing zone.  It is a safety concern and as winter approaches it is especially problematic for the students and the bus drivers.

Mental Health Awareness Day

Tomorrow (Thursday October 10th) is Mental Health Awareness day.
We will combine this day with our Thorncliffe School virtue of the month which is Peacefulness.

Students will be asked to think about what things bring peacefulness in their lives. Finding peace in our lives is important for the mental health of everyone!

Tomorrow is our library day, and a final reminder that there will be no school on Friday or Monday.
Have a relaxing Thanksgiving!

News and Notes this Week

Hi Parents,

Please return any library books this Tuesday.  Tuesday and Thursday are both library days for both classes.

This week is the letter g and students are brainstorming words that start with g.  We are reading books, watching videos with opportunities to practice graphemes and identify initial sounds in words.

Kindergarten will not have access to the gym for Physical Education this week- we will be using our classroom and potentially head outside, so please prepare your children with appropriate clothing for the weather.

Another reminder that this Friday is a Professional Development day and Monday is Thanksgiving, therefore there is no school for students on Friday or Monday.

Just a reminder to return library books on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Weather permitting, the students enjoy opportunities to do our gym classes outside.  Please make sure that your child (children) are dressed for and have appropriate footwear for running and participating in outdoor sports and activities.

This upcoming Friday, October 11th is a school wide PD day and Monday, October 14th is Thanksgiving Day.  There is no school for all students on these days.

Ms. Phillips and Mr. Larson

Wednesday 2 October 2019

Kindergarten Reminders

Hello,

PM students attend this Friday.

Please return any library books this Thursday.  Tuesday and Thursday are both library days for both classes.

This week is the letter f and students are brainstorming words that start with f.   We're reading books, watching videos with opportunities to practice graphemes and identify initial sounds in words.

Parents can work with their child (children) on the conventions of printing by having them practice their name with an upper case letter for the first letter only.  Students are using all upper case or a combination of upper and lower.  We're working on the correct usage of capitalization.

For the safety of all of the children and to support our bus drivers in their work to keep your children safe please have your children and any children in your care enter and exit your vehicles from the sidewalk side.  Children are at risk and bus drivers are expressing their concern when children are crossing in front of busses.  The street is very narrow and the amount of traffic at these times requires additional vigilance!

Thank you,

Ms. Phillips and Mr. Larson
